Weight Loss Medication: A Comprehensive Approach to Weight Management
Weight loss medications are prescription treatments designed to support individuals struggling with obesity or overweight conditions. These medications work by helping to regulate appetite, increase metabolism, or reduce fat absorption, providing an additional tool in comprehensive weight management strategies.
Unlike quick-fix solutions, these medications are most effective when combined with lifestyle changes like balanced nutrition and regular physical activity. They're typically prescribed for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have weight-related health conditions.

Boxed Warning
WARNING: RISK OF THYROID C-CELL TUMORS. In rodents, GLP-1 receptor agonists caused dose-dependent and treatment-duration-dependent thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures. It is unknown whether GLP-1 medications cause thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans. GLP-1 medications are contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
- Pancreatitis: Acute pancreatitis has been reported with GLP-1 receptor agonists. Discontinue promptly if pancreatitis is suspected. Do not restart if confirmed.
- Acute Kidney Injury: Cases of acute kidney injury have been reported, sometimes requiring dialysis. Use caution in patients with renal impairment.
- Hypoglycemia: When used with insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas) or insulin, the risk of hypoglycemia is increased.
- Contraindications: Do not use in patients with a personal or family history of MTC, MEN 2, or known hypersensitivity to the active substance.
